Two riders and an idea: Massimo Roccoli and Alex De Angelis are the creative couple in the paddock of the Women’s European Championship, together they have decided to found a team in the championship dedicated to women. Roc’n’DeA is the name of the team, a project born almost as a joke that is now fighting for the title in the WEC.
“The idea was born a little bit for fun and a little bit as a joke”, Roccoli, team manager together with De Angelis, tells us. “When Alex was still racing, we often trained together, and this created interest even from the youngsters who joined us in training on track. When we were riding to train, we were spending a lot of time with the youngsters to help them set up the bike. One day Alex looked at me and said: what if we make this a reality by creating a team and giving this support to our riders? I answered him: why not!”.
This is a very different reality from many others, there’s no doubt. It comes to life from the track and there it reaps the benefits of its work. “The big difference is that we hit the track together with our riders” says De Angelis. “The great thing about our team is that we have the same bikes as our riders. We go on the track with them, so we can show them telemetry and data, but also we do real riding lessons. We put cameras on our bikes and the riders’ bikes so we can see the differences once we go back to the garage. We always have telemetry, so our boys and girls can see how we use the bike. It’s not just words, we are able to help them and support them in every way. We are so proud, because we see the growth very quickly”.
This great work is taking the Roc’n’DeA team higher and higher: Roberta Ponziani, one of their riders in the WEC, dominated the first round and now she is fighting for the championship. Aurelia Cruciani, who joined the team at the end of last year, is also showing great strength and she is third in the standings. “With Aurelia and Roberta, we are going really, really strong”, says Alex. “Maybe with Aurelia we have reaped a little less than we thought, because crashes in the races have kept us behind in the championship. But she has already done more podiums than in previous years and she has improved a lot her personal times on all tracks. Roberta shows the speed we knew every time she hits the track, maybe even better than we expected. In our opinion, these girls can still learn a lot and improve even though they are older than many kids”.
Roc’n’DeA is a huge bet, because women are creating their space in the motorsport, but struggling a little bit. Massimo Roccoli explains that him and De Angelis think how important is to highlight this new reality: “We have decided to take a slightly bigger step this year by living this WEC adventure, because we are convinced that there is interest, greater visibility, and this is also very important for the team. It’s not easy, but this allows us to join forces even more to believe a lot in this bet. We are counting on it a lot, we have put a lot of effort into this project, we hope to continue to be among the main characters of this paddock”.
“We call ourselves team managers, but for all intents and purposes we think as if we were riders”, De Angelis says, then he talks about future plans. “We try to give our girls everything we would have wanted when we were in the categories in which we participated. We are very ambitious, and we will soon launch our even bigger projects”.
The creativity of Roccoli and De Angelis is making a fundamental contribution to the growth of the WEC, which increasingly confirms itself as a championship in which to invest in major projects to create a more…pink future in motorcycling.
WEC meets…Roc’n’DeA: un gioco di squadra diventato realtà
Due piloti e un’idea: Massimo Roccoli e Alex De Angelis sono la coppia creativa del paddock della Women’s European Championship, insieme hanno deciso di fondare una squadra approdata nel campionato dedicato alle donne. Roc’n’DeA è il nome della squadra, un progetto è nato quasi per gioco che ora sta lottando per il titolo nella WEC.
“L’idea è nata un po’ per gioco e un po’ per scherzo”, ci racconta Roccoli, team manager insieme a De Angelis. “Quando Alex era in attività, spesso ci allenavamo insieme e questa cosa creava interesse anche da parte dei giovani che si aggregavano. Quando ci trovavamo a girare, il tempo che dedicavamo ai giovani con la nostra esperienza per aiutarli a sistemare la moto era moltissimo. Un giorno Alex mi ha guardato e mi ha detto: se questa cosa la facciamo diventare una realtà creando un team e dando questo supporto ai nostri piloti? Gli ho risposto: perché no!”.
Indubbiamente si tratta di una realtà molto differente da tante altre, che prende vita dalla pista e proprio in pista raccoglie i suoi frutti. “La differenza grande è che noi scendiamo in pista insieme ai nostri piloti”, racconta De Angelis. “La cosa bella del nostro team è proprio questa. Noi abbiamo delle moto come loro, delle 300. Oltre a scendere in pista con loro, quindi mostriamo la telemetria, facciamo dei veri e propri corsi di guida. Mettiamo le telecamere sulle moto nostre e dei piloti per vedere poi le differenze al box. Inoltre, abbiamo sempre la telemetria, così i nostri ragazzi e le nostre ragazze possono vedere come usiamo la moto. Non sono solo parole, riusciamo ad aiutarli ed aiutarle in tutto e per tutto. Questo è motivo di grande orgoglio, perché vediamo la crescita in maniera velocissima”.
Questo grande lavoro sta portando il team Roc’n’DeA sempre più in alto: Roberta Ponziani, pilota impegnata nella WEC, ha dominato il primo round e ora è in lotta per il campionato. Anche Aurelia Cruciani, arrivata nella squadra alla fine dello scorso anno, si sta mostrando molto forte ed è terza in campionato. “Con Aurelia e Roberta stiamo andando veramente molto, molto forte”, racconta Alex. “Con Aurelia, forse, abbiamo raccolto poco rispetto a quello che pensavamo, perché le cadute in gara ci hanno tenuto indietro in campionato. Ma ha già fatto più podi degli anni scorsi e ha abbassato i suoi tempi personali di molto in tutte le piste. Roberta, ogni volta che entra in pista, fa vedere la velocità che conoscevamo, ma forse anche meglio. Secondo noi, queste ragazze, pur essendo più grandi rispetto a tanti ragazzini, possono ancora imparare tanto e migliorarsi”.
Roc’n’DeA è una scommessa enorme, perché le donne si stanno facendo spazio pian piano, non senza difficoltà. Massimo Roccoli ci spiega quanto entrambi ritengano importante mettere in risalto questa nuova realtà: “Sicuramente quest’anno abbiamo deciso di fare un passo un po’ più grande lanciandoci in questa avventura europea della WEC perché siamo convinti che ci sia interesse, una visibilità maggiore, ed è un aspetto molto importante anche per il team. Non è semplice, ma questo ci permette di unire ancora di più le forze per credere molto in questa scommessa. Ci contiamo tanto, abbiamo messo molto impegno in questo progetto, speriamo di continuare a essere grandi protagonisti”.
“Noi ci chiamiamo team manager, ma ragioniamo a tutti gli effetti come fossimo dei piloti”, prosegue De Angelis, che poi parla dei progetti futuri. “Cerchiamo di dare loro tutto quello che noi avremmo desiderato quando eravamo nelle categorie in cui abbiamo partecipato. Siamo molto ambiziosi e a breve lanceremo i nostri progetti ancora più grandi”.
La creatività di Roccoli e De Angelis sta dando un contributo fondamentale alla crescita della WEC, che sempre di più si conferma un campionato in cui investire nei grandi progetti per creare un futuro più…rosa nel motociclismo.
